Have you ever went to an online forum and read a very interesting dialogue and learned something interesting or got a new idea or perhaps had your interests piqued? Boy, I have and you can learn a lot reading online forums if they are of a specific topic of interest. Of course the pre-requisite is that you have to have an open and clear mind, otherwise all bets are off.
Not long ago a senile English gentleman in an online forum, who claims to be a novelist, corporate consultant, marriage councilor, dream expert and sex therapist, claimed that "free-flowing forums" don't mean anything and generally he thought that they were worthless. Interestingly enough he only made this statement after he had attacked others in the forum and they reciprocated defeating his wild accusations and completely bogus use of logic.
The problem was not with the forum itself but rather with the cranial capacity, slipping IQ level and senile issues of the detracting Englishman forums poster and contributor. Without an open mind you cannot learn anything.
Of course in his estimation no one participating in the online forum was committed in his opinion and thus he believed it was all just "Self-Expression" and to what avail? Indeed, it appears that he himself was committed to nothing more than his own attacks on others. See the problem?
In fact there were people on that forum interested in a potential project that might have formed out of the dialogue. Of course the senile old man who had failed in life and wanted to take out his anger on others simply could not see it. Either due to a failing mind, refusal to have an open mind or a little of both and thus please beware when using online forums that these types of people troll the internet for the sole purpose of spreading mean-spirited comments.
